It can cause women severe pain or no pain at all. Health experts say ovarian cysts are common.

Dr. Melissa Lee, an OB/GYN with Lee Memorial Health System, says ovarian cysts are random but common. “An ovarian cyst is basically a fluid filled sack that’s on the ovary. Every female that has ever had a period has probably had a cyst at some point in their life.”

Patients can develop one or multiple cysts. If a patient complains of pain, health experts may do a pelvic exam or ultra-sound. If they find a cyst it will typically do away on its own without intervention. “Where the egg is released the ovary kind of just reseals on it and that fluid collects just to fill up that space. Over time that fluid will just be reabsorbed by the body and the little space that was empty is now closed,” said Dr. Lee.

But if the cyst and pain return, health experts may decide to do further evaluation. “The concern comes with cysts that are persistent, cysts that are getting larger, cysts that are giving you pain,” said Dr. Lee.

The concern increases if the cysts continue throughout menopause. “If we see something that appears to be highly abnormal or highly concerning or something that appears to be growing rapidly then we are a little bit more suspicious for something to be malignant,” said Dr. Lee.

While it’s extremely rare, Dr. Lee says these types of ovarian cysts can be cancerous. “Hormonal birth control can help prevent you from developing more cysts in the future,” said Dr. Lee.

If you have reoccurring pelvic pain it’s important to see your doctor.

Ovarian cystectomy for Left Ovarian Cyst

Like any surgical procedure, ovarian cystectomy is associated with certain risks such as excessive blood loss and an infection requiring antibiotic treatment. Additionally, women should consult their surgeon regarding:

Laparoscopic Risks – The rupture of an ovarian cyst is possible with either laparoscopic or open surgical procedures, but studies indicate that rupture rates are higher in laparoscopy. In benign, or non-malignant (non-cancerous) cases, this is of no concern. If a cancerous mass does rupture, patients will require chemotherapy due to the spill of cancerous cells into the pelvis.
Laparoscopic Advantages – In properly selected patients, using laparoscopy to remove cysts saves thousands of women every year the difficult recovery and increased complications associated with open surgery. Women are discharged from the hospital the same day, with excellent pain control and rapid recovery.
DualPortGYN for ovarian cystectomy is a pioneering new GYN surgical tehcnique developed at The Center for Innovative GYN Care that uses only two, 5 millimeter incisions. One incision is placed at the belly button and the other is at the bikini line. With these incisions, most GYN procedures can be performed safely in an outpatient setting in less than one hour.

Q) What are Ovarian Cysts? 0:23

A) An ovarian cyst is a large fluid sac that can develop within or on an ovary. It can be simple, which means thin walled filled with fluid or can be complex that it is may contain thick fluid, blood or solid areas.

Q) How common are Ovarian Cysts? 0:44

A) Ovarian Cyst is very common. Most women are unaware that they are often without any symptom and disappear spontaneously with time. But 1 in 10 women may need surgery at some point in their lives.

Q) What are the Symptoms? 1:03

A) They are often asymptomatic and found
• incidentally during physical examination by Gynaecologist, or
• when a patient shows some symptoms like nausea, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, pelvis, lower back, thigh, and unusual bleeding.

Q) How are Ovarian Cysts Diagnosed? 1:23

A) As said they are usually diagnosed by
• a physical examination by a gynaecologist
• imaging studies
• a pelvic ultrasound or an MRI

Q) What are the Causes of Ovarian Cyst? 1:37

A) The most common causes of ovarian cysts are
• Hormonal problem – Hormonal Problems as seen in Polycystic Ovarian Disease.
• Endometriosis – In women who have endometriosis they can develop a cyst filled with blood called endometrioma.
• Pregnancy – In early pregnancy, a small ovarian cyst called a corpus luteal cyst normally develops to support the pregnancy until the placenta forms.
• Severe pelvic infections – In case of severe pelvic infections it can spread to the ovaries and fallopian tubes and cause cysts to form.

Q) Can Ovarian Cyst affect Fertility? 2:10

A) Not all ovarian cysts affect fertility. Some cysts that become very large and require treatment by surgery or medications can affect fertility. Polycystic ovaries and endometrioma are known to affect fertility.

Q) Can Ovarian Cyst cause Cancer? 2:29

A) Yes, rarely ovarian cysts can be cancerous. The risk increases with age. Post-menopausal women with ovarian cysts have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Q) What are the Treatments of Ovarian Cysts? 2:47

A) The treatment option is dependent on the patient’s age, their fertility status, symptoms and how large the cyst is. Treatment can be conservative or medical in which patient is told to wait and watch as the majority of cysts disappear on their own. In case of larger cysts or symptomatic like pain during periods or in cases of twisting of the ovary then surgical removal of the cyst is recommended. Complex cyst usually requires further evaluation and surgical removal may be needed.

Q) Why come to Medicover Fertility for the treatment of Ovarian Cyst? 3:27

A) Medicover Fertility is a clinic with International standards and high success rate that uses advanced fertility treatments and enable couples with severe infertility problems to successfully conceive.
As we know that all ovarian cysts do not cause infertility. Some cysts tend to go on their own and some can be managed through medications. But a cause like the polycystic ovary syndrome, endometrioma, and some ovarian tumour a patient should see a doctor sooner as it may reduce fertility if left untreated, in fact, a further plan of fertility treatment should be timely discussed. In cases where they are looking for pregnancy, we treat these patients with the individualistic treatment plan. In some cases where the patient have been trying for a long time or have some other factors causing infertility, we at Medicover can maximise their chance of fertility by IVF technology.
In some cases of a complex cyst, we have a team of doctors who have vast experience and have had advanced training in performing minimally invasive surgery that is laparoscopy for the removal of these complicated cysts.

This video demonstrate laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy for dermoid cyst by Dr R K Mishra at World Laparoscopy Hospital. A dermoid cyst is a sac-like growth that is present at birth. It contains structures such as hair, fluid, teeth, or skin glands that can be found on or in the skin. Dermoid cysts grow slowly and are not tender unless ruptured. They usually occur on the face, inside the skull, on the lower back, and in the ovaries. While all ovarian cysts can range in size from very small to quite large, dermoid cysts are not classified as functional cysts. Dermoid cysts originate from totipotential germ cells (which are present at birth) that differentiate abnormally, developing characteristics of mature dermoid cyst The dermoid cyst occasionally converts into cancer if untreated.
